DirectAdmin Hacked

News
From the official forum post Thanks for your patience everyone. We are still investigating but don't want to leave you in the dark. Here's what we know so far: Our server was compromised (not at the root level but serious enough nonetheless) and is being used to send those malicious e-mails to customers. We have disabled our mail server to interrupt this process. Some customer information has been compromised: Name, e-mail address, mailing address, license ID#'s. Billing information (e.g. Credit Card numbers, PayPal accounts, etc.) is absolutely safe. We use a restricted merchant gateway that doesn't allow us, even as owners, to view your full credit card information. Finally, don't click that link. It's a malicious program but it can be cleaned with Trend Micro Housecall, MalwareByte's Anti-Malware, etc. Will…

Overcommitting with KVM

News, Reviews, Virtual Private Server
Someone pointed out a shocking fact in LET that KVM, the new popular virtualization type, can be over-committed even more then the infamous OpenVZ The KVM hypervisor supports overcommitting CPUs and overcommitting memory. Overcommitting is allocating more virtualized CPUs or memory than there are physical resources on the system. With CPU overcommit, under-utilized virtualized servers or desktops can run on fewer servers which saves power and money. Read it all at docs.redhat.com also read the complete thread at LET Is KVM the next oversold VPS? for more enlightenment

NordicVPS down the drain?

News, Virtual Private Server
Update (April 25, 2011): Added two slideshares at the end of the blog post to show the initial notice that I received and the followup almost supportless support ticket Well it may be shocking for some but its true. NordicVPS.com is down the drain for most. I believe it all started when they introduced BuyVMish (as Francisco calls it) $15/year package in Oct, 2010 (apparently many did and no one can kick it off as smooth as BuyVM did). (more…)

HostDime takes over VPSLatch.net

News, Reviews, Thoughts, Virtual Private Server
Update (01-April-2011): I contacted HostDime to ask for an offer that Adam accepted some months ago AND I was going to purchase that in June this year. HostDime staff was pretty professional to go through the tickets and offer me the same (right now OR when I later come and give reference to the ticket number with HostDime .... SOLID OFFER I must say) Not an April Fool joke ... (more…)

GigeVPS.net Purchase by NetIntelligence Ltd (ThrustVPS)

News, Virtual Private Server
So the news I missed last week is, GigeVPS.net has been Purchase by NetIntelligence Ltd (ThrustVPS). Well it was not so long ago that Jacob purchased HostLatch.net from Adam and after nearly two months its been resold again, pretty fast I would say. This is what they have emailed to all their customers. Personally, I dont like Rus Foster and the way he operates business, especially after the last incident where he blackmailed me for a domain name that he wanted from me. (more…)

Download personal details of 100m Facebook users

News, Social Networking, Virtual Private Server
Update (April 23, 2011): I have updated the download urls to point to new servers A little while ago (approx 2 weeks) I read a story online which claimed a person has downloaded a compiled 100m Facebook users' personal data. I searched online and found this torrent on thepiratebay.org I downloaded this torrent and to my surprise, its almost NOTHING personal. Just names and Facebook IDs. Anyway, I also found a BBC Story on the same topic which is pathetic! They sounded this as if Facebook is HACKED, which is not the case. Anyway, anyone who does not want to download via other file-sharing services or torrents can download this from the following VPS locations Location 1 (US) Location 2 (UK) P.S. If, for some reasons, you cannot download this…

The Planet Announces Cloud Hosting

News
The Planet just jumped in to the cloud computing announcing the launch of Server Cloud Hosting. Cloud computing gives you more reliability, computing power with the advantage of seamless scalability in terms of resources but at the same time its pretty expensive, in my opinion. The minimum package starts from $49 with just 60GB space and 512MB ram with 1TB bandwith (transfer). The bigger packages cost $99 and $179. All prices are per month in USD. One thing that amazes is why there is just 60GB in the core packages? I wonder if a XEN from LINODE.COM is better then this cloud offer? LINODE has been very very stable with almost no downtime or issues. XEN512 from LINODE costs $20 per month. Since The Planet is new, I cannot comment…
