We see misleading marketing gimmicks everyday when we visit the superstore where false advertisement and sel-proclaimed-number-one is common but if thats coming from a reputable (so-called) company, its somewhat a underwhelming gesture. Frantech / BuyVM opening new location in Buffalo, NY

The other day, I was looking at the Frantech's weird (as in cool) way of showing their stock / restock and last stock status at DoesBuyVMhaveStock.com and I noticed there is a new tab for Buffalo, NY (yayy!!!) Currently they operate out from only one location that is San Jose, CA which gives me like 400ms from PTCL which makes it very hard to use their VPN service or host any content targeted for Pakistani users. Psst!! have been using Amazon's S3 along with Amazon CloudFront for such purposes which is dirt cheap anyway. Cancelled QuickWeb

Today, I cancelled my last VPS with Quickweb in WDC (XEN PV). Although the service is stable but the actual VPS was costing me about two times from another stable reputable provider and since im on savings-mode, I want to experiment by moving that node from Quickweb to SecureDragon. Quickweb was my first VPS provider back in May, 2010 and so, I have a bond with them even though I cannot afford their VPSes mainly because there are other cheaper and stable options available in the market. Enable ping response for Windows Server

I recently got two windows VPS for testing and stuff. The issue I faced was that even though they were Windows 2008 VPS, I still could not ping it. Came to know later that its a security feature and hence all pings are disabled. You just need to enable it by running the following command on command prompt [code]netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8[/code] If you wish to disable it, later, you may run this to do so [code]netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 disable[/code]

Overcommitting with KVM

Someone pointed out a shocking fact in LET that KVM, the new popular virtualization type, can be over-committed even more then the infamous OpenVZ The KVM hypervisor supports overcommitting CPUs and overcommitting memory. Overcommitting is allocating more virtualized CPUs or memory than there are physical resources on the system. With CPU overcommit, under-utilized virtualized servers or desktops can run on fewer servers which saves power and money. It has been a while since I’ve last written here, and it will be a while again for my next post as I will be on holidays from next Monday (visiting families in Hong Kong and Taiwan). Let me share one small utility program that I wrote quite a while ago. We all know that the Linux command free(1) is pretty useless inside an OpenVZ VE, even those with meminfo virtualised. So I basically wrote this little util to grab the data from the dreadful user_beancounters and format them into something useful. Update (April 25, 2011): Added two slideshares at the end of the blog post to show the initial notice that I received and the followup almost supportless support ticket Well it may be shocking for some but its true. NordicVPS.com is down the drain for most. I believe it all started when they introduced BuyVMish (as Francisco calls it) $15/year package in Oct, 2010 (apparently many did and no one can kick it off as smooth as BuyVM did). (more…)
